There’s a moment every artist reaches where they think,
“I believe people would want to own this.

That’s a powerful place to begin.

But before selling your work, before building a website, before reaching out to galleries… there is one thing that matters most:

You need a body of work that feels connected.

Not perfect. Not finished forever.
Just clear enough that someone can recognize you in it.

What does a “body of work” actually mean?

It’s not just a collection of random pieces.

It’s work that shares:

  • a similar feeling
  • a consistent style or approach
  • a common subject, idea, or curiosity

When someone sees 10 of your pieces together, they should feel like:

“Yes… this all comes from the same artist.”

How to build your first collection

Start simple.

  1. Choose your main direction
    What do you naturally create?
Don’t overthink it. Follow what keeps pulling you back.
  2. Look for patterns
    Ask yourself:
  • What do I keep making?
  • What do I enjoy exploring?
  • What feels most like me?
  1. Create 10–20 related pieces
    Not identical—but clearly connected.
  2. Remove the distractions
If a piece doesn’t fit, set it aside.
It doesn’t mean it’s bad—it just belongs to a different chapter.
  3. Give your work a name (optional, but powerful)
Naming your collection helps others understand it—and helps you talk about it.

A quiet truth

It may feel overly simple.
But simple, steady steps are how artists grow.

What this gives you

  • clarity in your direction
  • confidence when talking about your work
  • a foundation you can build everything else on

When people talk about creativity, they often focus on the final result — the painting on the wall, the sculpture on the pedestal, the song on the radio, or the solution to a difficult problem.
