There’s a moment every artist reaches where they think,
“I believe people would want to own this.

That’s a powerful place to begin.
But before selling your work, before building a website, before reaching out to galleries… there is one thing that matters most:
You need a body of work that feels connected.
Not perfect. Not finished forever.
Just clear enough that someone can recognize you in it.
What does a “body of work” actually mean?
It’s not just a collection of random pieces.
It’s work that shares:
- a similar feeling
- a consistent style or approach
- a common subject, idea, or curiosity
When someone sees 10 of your pieces together, they should feel like:
“Yes… this all comes from the same artist.”
How to build your first collection
Start simple.
- Choose your main direction
What do you naturally create?
Don’t overthink it. Follow what keeps pulling you back. - Look for patterns
Ask yourself:
- What do I keep making?
- What do I enjoy exploring?
- What feels most like me?
- Create 10–20 related pieces
Not identical—but clearly connected. - Remove the distractions
If a piece doesn’t fit, set it aside.
It doesn’t mean it’s bad—it just belongs to a different chapter. - Give your work a name (optional, but powerful)
Naming your collection helps others understand it—and helps you talk about it.
A quiet truth
It may feel overly simple.
But simple, steady steps are how artists grow.
What this gives you
- clarity in your direction
- confidence when talking about your work
- a foundation you can build everything else on
