Pat Baum Bishop has spent years exploring what fabric can become. Her work moves from recognizable landscapes and wildlife to abstraction, combining color, texture, stitching and painting in ways that often blur the line between textile and fine art.

MEET THE ARTIST

Pat Baum Bishop

Pat has been making things for as long as she can remember. Sewing and needlework eventually led to traditional quilting, and traditional quilting eventually became something much more experimental.

Today, fabric remains at the heart of much of Pat's work, but it doesn't define its boundaries.

She paints with watercolor and acrylic, works directly on fabric, photographs the world around her and continually experiments with abstraction, simplification, texture and form. Nature is her greatest inspiration, along with weathered buildings and the disappearing family farm.

Her work has been exhibited internationally and has received numerous awards. In 2007, two of her art quilts were juried into the International Quilt Festival in Houston and both received awards; she later became a Juried Artist Member of Studio Art Quilt Associates.

Pat describes herself as largely self-taught. She once believed professional artists were simply born with an innate ability. Her own journey taught her something different—that practice, determination, passion and hard work matter enormously.
